Are you satisfied with your chosen profession? Stress at work can be devastating to your personal life. Just think for a minute, you probably commute and stay at work for a great part of a single day. That is a long time to be dissatisfied.
If you genuinely feel you’re trapped at your current job, here are great tips to find a new one:
Brainstorm on a notebook – Take a pad of paper and write down at the top what you want in the form of a question. After that, just list as many answers as you can. For example, you may choose to write “What do I want most in life?” Then after that spend the next hour or so compiling a list of answers to the question . This is an exercise that you can do over and over again till you get a satisfactory answer.
Talk to people who know you – Sometimes our friends and relatives know us as compared to ourselves. While socializing with a friend or a relative, mention you are at a crossroads in your life and career. Ask their advice on what they think you enjoy doing. You might be surprised at how easily they can pinpoint the skill sets that you like using over and over and report a perfect job area.
Talk to people at work – Not always obvious but your boss and coworkers most likely see you in a way you do not see yourself. In fact, they know your abilities as a professional. Make a list of what they say and look for a pattern.
Call a headhunter – Most professionals, like you, maintain resumes, sometimes, up-to-date. From time to time you may get lucky and catch a headhunter or recruiter in between recruiting schedules and discuss with them your career goals. I’ve done this at different times in my life and they didn’t mind speaking to me. The advice they’ve given me had been positive.
Take a skills assessment evaluation – Take note: to succeed in a profession, you’ll need to go through its own training and/or education process. Easy to illustrate, nursing career have a different training process from a railroad engineer. There are online sites where these tests are available to you at your convenience. From the previous tip, a lot of job placement agencies where headhunters work are already using a skills assessment program and will let you take the test in their office. These tests tend to be thorough requiring you to provide multiple choice answers about what you are good at, what you like to do, what you prefer doing over what you don’t. Again, this is another place to see some new exciting areas to explore in your life.
Jot down ideas, like in a journal – Having a record of your thoughts is fantastic especially when browsing for past observation of what you did right or made you smile. Keep your eyes peeled for trends and activities you like as well as don’t like. Also, what you don’t like is as critical as the things that you do not like. As an example, if you’re averse to an overbearing supervisor, you’d probably like a self-directed position.
Understanding your career goals can be puzzling, yet very critical to you. We spend 1/3 or more of our lives at work. Hence, its worthwhile to figure it out.
